I’m surrounded by incredible, inspiration, beautiful women who cause me to view my world in a whole new way on the daily. Two such women are Catherine Just and Jennah Ferrer-Foronda. These artist/photographer/mystical goddess creators continue to revive my creative eye, precisely at the moment when my own creative power wanes. In the first days of the new year, Catherine created a 10 day movement called "Self Portraiture as Medicine" and I found out about it through Jennah. Day one had us taking a selfie and choosing a word for the year, something I wanted to avoid. I don’t want to choose a word. I don’t want to fall into the cliche world of choosing words and creating resolutions, partly because I do this type of thing regularly throughout the year and partly because doing something I was told to do will likely result in me rebelling against the whole thing (i know, I know…). But, as I stood there staring at myself, examining my makeup-free face, staring into my brimming-with-curiosity eyes, a word simply presented itself. I heard “life” and I listened closer, my breathing became slow and deliberate, something amazing was happening and I wanted to take it all in. I closed my eyes and felt it.
Life, what is it?
What does it mean to truly LIVE?
Every day I find myself living more and more and this creates an almost insatiable appetite to expand into greater levels of being.
My word for this year is LIFE and I shall explore as many aspects of this adventure as possible daily.
The self portrait as medicine I chose to share with you below was one I took right after an incredibly revelational experience at the Thermal Waters in Bath, England. It was at once a coming home and a rebirth...it's difficult to articulate in words the sensations that took place. And after, I felt so new, so curious, so raw and so incredibly alive. I captured this moment and waited for the right time and place to share it.
What about you? What is your word for this year, for this week, for this day?
It doesn't matter what month we’re in, you can choose a theme for right now and live it starting today. I’d love to know what you come up with.
An easy way to hear your inner knowing and get a word directly from your soul is to do exactly what I did above. Simply breathe into it as you watch yourself, your eyes in the mirror. Quiet the mind and listen for what comes through. And, please do share with me in the comments below.
